The Royal Scotsman

Discover Scotland on the Royal Scotsman Train

From early April until late October each year you can step back in time and take a journey on The Royal Scotsman. This will be an experience that you will remember a lifetime. The Royal Scotsman will take you straight to the heart of the Highlands, through landscapes of towering pine-clad mountains reflected in mirror-still lochs.

Just 36 guests travel through Scotland’s finest countryside in private cabins, with an open-deck observation carriage behind. Life on board this luxury train is relaxed and indulgent, with gastronomic dining and the convivial atmosphere of celebrating with friends. After dinner, over a wee dram (whisky), a local clansman recounts tales that bring Scottish history alive.

Along the way, guests disembark to meet local personalities, talk to experts on subjects from salmon fishing to whisky and take part in fun activities – truly a Scottish rail vacation par excellence. A tour of Scotland aboard this luxurious train brings to life the magical landscape and legends of this spectacular country.

The Royal Scotsman wends through the wild Scottish countryside, through deep-green forests of pine, moors that turn purple in August and September when the heather is in bloom, golden fern covered hills, bright-green meadows dotted with black-faced sheep and shaggy Highland cattle, remote castles steeped in mystery and romance, whitewashed villages and calm, wide lochs that reflect the changing colours of the sky.

Guests disembark daily to visit exceptional places of interest, such as private residences or whisky distilleries, where highlights include privileged access and even a personal tour by the local laird. Activities may include watching local fishermen haul up their catch.

Sitting in the Observation Car, a wee dram in hand, guests might spot a magnificent stag atop a heather-covered crag or glimpse a pine marten dashing for woodland cover.

Journeys last either two, three, four, five or seven nights depending on your choice of dates and route. You can ever charter the whole train and then choose your route according to dates!
And now you have the opportunity to combine The Royal Scotsman with a Hebridean Island Cruise.
