Visiting the Cathedral – a place where History has happened
There has been a church on this site for over a thousand years. Originally a Saxon Minster, then rebuilt as a Benedictine Abbey, this building is a national treasure in the heart of the city. Chester Cathedral demonstrates the skills of craftsmen: from Norman arches to gothic columns, spectacular 14th Century woodcarvings, the medieval shrine of St. Werburgh and spectacular stained glass. The Cloisters and Church form one of the most complete medieval monastic complex in the country. Visitors can take an audio tour, visit the 13th Century Refectory Café and browse the beautiful Cathedral Gift Shop, full of great ideas!

Chester City Walls
The most complete Roman and medieval defensive town system in Britain They form an almost 2-miles complete circuit of the city as it was in the medieval era! The walk is on a continuous elevated walkway, apart from a short section. It incorporates medieval structures, including several towers and the four major medieval gates.

The walls are recognised as a Scheduled Monument. Almost every section of them has been designated by English Heritage as both a Grade I and II* listed buildings.

Don’t forget the waterways!
Hiring a barge and cruising through the Cheshire canal system is an increasing popular activity. Why not hire a narrow boat for the day to meander the local canals? It’s a perfect day out for all the family and a great way to relax as you cruise the Cheshire Canals! If you prefer to explore the canals on foot, Middlewich Waterside Trail is one tow-path that allows you to follow the course of the canal for 3,5 miles.
